Classical and Modern Persian poetry Modernist poetry, namely, a poetry which departs radically from the traditional school of the old masters, began to emerge only after World War II, when the deep social changes which had been developing for some time finally challenged the venerable literary tradition in a drastic fashion and eroded its foundations. Nima Yushij (1897-1960), the father of modernist poetry, died in relative obscurity, but after World War II a number of young poets took up his cause, fighting against the shackles of literary conventions and writing free verse, sometimes with a vengeance. The vogue gathered momentum, and by the late 1950s it had become the dominant mode of avant-garde Persian poetry. Tahereh Zareie

One Thousand and One Nights (part 2)

The Thousand and One Nights known as Arabian Nights in western countries, is a collection of entertaining and instructive tales with Persian, Indian, and Arabic backgrounds. It is narrated that in ancient times, in the land of Persia, there was a king called King Shahryar. He had reigned happily in his kingdom for a long time. One day, however, he discovered that his wife had been unfaithful to him. This filled him with disgust. The whole world darkened before his eyes. He put his wife and all her maids to death. None of these murders, however, quenched his thirst for revenge. Therefore, he made it a custom to marry a young girl every night and kill her the next morning. He continued this crime for 3 years until the vizier’s daughter Shahrzad volunteered to marry the king. Shahrzad was a wise, clever girl who knew a lot about ancient legends. The very first night before the king’s decision to kill her, she told him an amusing story with a built-up of suspense. Thus the king postpones her death to the next night. On the second night she told another interesting story which would be completed the following night. This went on for a thousand and one nights. During this time Shahrzad gave birth to three children and thus they started a family in the real sense. Moreover, The Thousand and One Nights which had passed between King Shahryar and his wife proved that Shahrzad was an intelligent, virtuous woman and that he should not judge people so hastily. So, we (Sara Solouki & Marjan Samadian) decided to retell some stories of this collection.
